By trying out these ideas in your sketching, yours can do that too.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Figures help your audience put themselves in the picture<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether you draw for fun or for a living (or both!), and you want to liven up your work by making it more visually interesting (or both!)&nbsp;<strong>adding figures and faces to your communications makes a big impact<\/strong>. Our eyes can\u2019t help but lock into the eyes of another face, or the pose of a figure. Why? To seek meaning and affinity. My own pet theory is that we are constantly looking to see something of ourselves, or to learn more about ourselves, whenever we look at art in general, and visuals in particular.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or as George Bernard Shaw said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>You use a glass mirror to see your face; you use works of art to see your soul.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Figures can do the &#8216;heavy lifting&#8217; for business audiences<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>You can also use this to great effect for visuals in business communication<\/strong>. Take a leaf out of the advertising playbook:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Do you want to attract staff to be part of some change at work<\/strong>? Show figures thinking about and\/or reaching the same goals that they have.  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Do you want to highlight a particular product\/ service&nbsp;<em>problem<\/em>&nbsp;to stakeholders<\/strong>? Show people being impacted by that problem. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Do you want to sell a&nbsp;<em>benefit<\/em>&nbsp;of a new product or process<\/strong>? We\u2019re not aiming for anatomically correct works of art here; we\u2019re just aiming for\u00a0<strong>the\u00a0<\/strong><em><strong>essence<\/strong><\/em><strong>\u00a0of a figure<\/strong>, or an expression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this post, I\u2019m going to focus on figures, and show you 3 secrets to drawing more impactful figures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. Draw the body language<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubiquity.acm.org\/article.cfm?id=2043156\">Most communication to each other we pick up on is non-verbal<\/a>, and a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bodylanguageexpert.co.uk\/communication-what-percentage-body-language.html\">big part of that is through body language<\/a>. This differs depending on context, but essentially: what we say with our bodies matters. So, the poses of the figures you draw matters, too!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pose of the figure you draw instantly tells a story, not only about <em>what they&#8217;re doing<\/em>, but maybe <em>how they feel about what they&#8217;re doing<\/em>. People rarely just stand bolt upright not doing anything; showing them moving around, slouching, sitting, lying down, or doing various things adds so much more vitality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Compare the pairs of figures below. Even though they\u2019re really simple, the second figure of each pair communicates a lot more, doesn&#8217;t it? <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"683\" height=\"512\" src=\"https:\/\/prestosketching.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/figures-bodylanguage.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-368\" style=\"width:469px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/prestosketching.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/figures-bodylanguage.png 683w, https:\/\/prestosketching.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/figures-bodylanguage-300x225.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Your figures will have more character and appear more\u00a0<em>real<\/em>\u00a0(<em>no matter how simple they are<\/em>), which makes your message much more compelling to your viewers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Draw people in their natural habitat<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Just like how people rarely stand bolt upright not doing anything, people tend to exist in <strong>some kind of environment<\/strong>, rather than just in a void. Think about\u00a0<em>where<\/em>\u00a0your figure is, not only what they\u2019re doing. Add a hint of background, something simple to indicate where they are, and perhaps even what time of the day it is. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"683\" height=\"512\" src=\"https:\/\/prestosketching.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/figures-habitat.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-369\" style=\"width:509px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/prestosketching.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/figures-habitat.png 683w, https:\/\/prestosketching.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/figures-habitat-300x225.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Add an accessory or two, or pose your figures in pairs to add a bit more interest and interaction.\u00a0<strong>When you use your imagination in your sketching in this way, you\u2019ll ignite your viewers\u2019 imaginations<\/strong> <strong>too<\/strong>, which will make your message more memorable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Dial up the drama<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Use a trick that cartoonists do, and try&nbsp;<em>exaggerating<\/em>&nbsp;the poses of your figures.
